Pre-Tan Prep

At The Sorority, we have a range of formulas that nourish and improve your skin while giving you a glow.

We do everything we can to ensure you look as great on the outside as you feel on the inside with a spray tan that actually improves your skin. There are, however, a few things that are out of our control, so be sure to follow the tan instructions prior to your appointment.  We can guarantee a flawless application however if the tan instructions are not followed, we are not able to guarantee the tan outcome will be as expected. To make the most of your tan, we suggest investing in a good exfoliation mitt, nourishing moisturiser and gradual tanner, all available to purchase at the Wandana Heights studio.

How to prepare for your spray tan

While The Sorority tanning process is thorough and easy, there are a few things you should do to prepare your skin for the spray tan. By following these preparation instructions, your spray tan will look great and last longer.

Moisturise in the lead up to your tan
Moisturising your body regularly in the week leading up to your tan will mean your skin is in the best condition possible for your appointment. Every morning or evening, take the time to nourish your body and pay particular attention to dry areas such as elbows, hands, ankles and feet. The Sorority's solutions are nourishing for your skin but hydration prior to the tan helps prepare your skin and will make your tan last longer. AVOID Aveeno, Dove and any fragranced lotions. The ingredients in these products change the PH balance of your skin and throw off the whole spray tan process. We recommend a Sorbolene lotion or fragrance-free lotion free from oils.

Exfoliate at least 12-24 hours before your appointment
Exfoliating several hours ahead of your appointment gives your pores time to close and avoid discolouration. Use oil free exfoliants.

Shower several hours before your spray tan appointment
If your skin is wet and your pores are exposed, the spray tan formula will not stick to your skin properly, leaving you with a patchy, discoloured tan. We recommend a cold shower with no soap if you do have to shower just before your tan, hot showers will open your pores.

AVOID Aveeno, Dove and any fragranced soaps prior to your spray tans!

PLEASE DO NOT USE AVEENO OR DOVE PRODUCTS! These products leave a film on your skin that directly leads to a blotchy tan and can change the PH balance of your skin which can throw off the whole spray tanning process.

Avoid moisturisers and other beauty products on the day of your tan
Come to your appointment with clean skin. No deodorant, lotions or other beauty products such as makeup or perfume. We recommend no deodorant to be worn on the day of your tan, if possible. This is very important because if you have deodorant, perfume or even a magnesium spray you have used the night before, your underarms or body can turn green due to the spray tan solution reacting with the ingredients in those products. As we spray you, the tan will turn green on your body, and we will be sure to make you aware of it.

Complete all other beauty services first*
This includes waxing, manicures, pedicures, lash appointments, facials, and massages! Waxing should be completed at least 48 hours prior to your tan.

*Nails are wiped post tan if you choose to have your nails done prior to your spray tan. If you are having nails done post spray tan, we just recommend no soaking of nails.

Wear loose-fitting clothing
Loose-fitting dark cotton clothes, such as t-shirt dresses ensure that none of the freshly applied tan formula will rub off.  Avoid denim, satin robes, yoga pants and bras. You are welcome to come to the studio in your robe as it is a residential address. Slip on shoes or flip flops are recommended too. If you wear socks and shoes to your appointment, we will recommend you don't put them back on. If you come to the studio wearing a bra, we will recommend that you don't put it back on.

Leather/vinyl seats
Bring a large towel (if you are coming to our studio) to cover your seats so that you avoid sweating off your fresh tan from sitting on leather/vinyl seats in the warmer months. If you’re wearing long trackies or loose pants you won’t need a towel for your seats.

Weather
If your appointment is booked at the studio, please ensure you park in the allocated parking spot (in front of the white barn door). If it is raining after your appointment, this will make it easier for us to walk you to your car with an umbrella. We always aim to have the studio at a comfortable temperature for your spray tan. If we are coming to you at your home, in summer we recommend having the space nice and cool so you are not sweating during the tan and in winter we recommend whatever temperature is comfortable for you.

Spray Tan Mistakes to Avoid

Don't:

  • Skip the exfoliation process prior to your appointment. This can lead to uneven color and patchiness.
  • Spray perfume on your body the day of your appointment.
  • Not exfoliate under your arms. Deodorant sometimes seeps around the areas of your skin so make sure you have a really good wash and exfoliation under your arms.
  • Drink water in the car on the way home. We often have clients that spill water on their tan before their first shower and this can result in uneven colour. If drinking water or any liquid at home, be mindful not to spill on your body until your first shower.
  • Don't let your pets lick you, you may end up with a patch of white.
  • Moisturize after the first shower. This can cause the tan to get blotchy or fade quickly.
  • Wear tight clothing immediately after your spray. This can leave unwanted marks and rub off some of the tan.
  • Shower too quickly, this can leave streaks in areas if not rinsed properly.
  • Cry post tan. We are all for showing your emotions, but crying will be considered the first shower for your face. If the tears come, make sure to grab a clean makeup brush straight away and blend the tan on your face.
  • Swim too soon after your spray tan. This can also lead to color fading or streaking.
