Spray Tan FAQs
When should I get my spray tan?
This is personal preference but we suggest tanning 1-2 days before your event. For weddings, 2 days before will so you are able to have 2 soapy showers prior to wearing your white dress. Heading off on a holiday? The day before is best. However, this is just a rough guideline, and we can always tailor our tan application to work with your schedule.
When should I shower after my tan?
Our aim is to give you a spray tan no one knows you’ve had and as our solution is rapid drying, you can shower as soon as 1.5 hours after your tan, or leave on the skin for up to 8 hours. The longer you leave any solution on, the darker the tan will develop. We always tailor our application to work with your plans, to ensure you achieve your desired colour. We don't recommend sleeping in tans but again, personal preference. The solutions we use don't require you to have to sleep in them to get your desired colour.
How long will my tan last?
Your tan, depending on your skin type, pre-tan preparation and after tan care, will generally last between 6 to 10 days. It's possible for your spray tan to last up to 12 days if you take extra good care of your skin and it is possible to prolong your tan with our gradual tanner.
I just showered and I am now wondering why I paid you for a spray tan.
Don’t worry, what you have rinsed off in the shower is the bronzer, not the tan itself. Your tan will continue to develop for 12 hours after application, so give your tan this time to develop so you can see the final result.
Will my tan come off on my clothes?
As bronzer is used in our product for colour to appear instantaneously, you may experience some rub off. If your clothes do stain, no stress, it should come out in the wash or at the dry cleaner.
Should I wash my hair before or after my tan?
We recommend washing your hair when you have your soapy shower, not during your first initial rinse or prior to your tan. We have disposable hair nets to cover your clean hair.
After tanning will I still need to wear sunscreen?
Yes! You’ll have to SPF off those harmful UV rays, as natural tanning doesn’t offer any sun protection. Be sun-smart when you’re out and about, and try to wear a moisturising sunscreen lotion wherever possible.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
You can wear your bathers, underwear, g-string or go completely naked – whatever makes you feel most comfortable. We pride ourselves on making you feel comfortable and safe in our space. Your nudes are safe with us.
Can you apply tan to the face?
Yes, we can at your request! We have lots of clients who prefer to not have their face sprayed so can avoid it if you prefer. It’s personal preference and we can discuss this more at your appointment.
Will I be orange?
The orange discoloration is due to improper application, color mixology, or improper skin care either before or after your spray tan. Follow our prep and aftercare instructions and you will be the perfect shade of bronze. One of the main reasons for an orange fake tan is an excessive buildup of DHA in the top layer of the skin. If you apply fake tan regularly or you use a product that has too high a concentration for your skin, the level of DHA can cause your tan to turn orange.
Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA for short) is the ingredient in a spray tan solution that darkens your skin. Too much DHA (also called DHA oversaturation) and your skin will instead react by starting to turn orange. The good news is that there is a tool, the Fitzpatrick Scale, that can help you determine which percentage strengths of DHA your skin can “handle” so that you can get a spray tan and be worry-free.
I have had a spray tan in the past and absolutely hated it. How will this experience be different to my previous spray tan?
There are so many misconceptions about spray tanning. Most of these stem from the early days of spray tanning when DHA was new and blended into self-tanners that turned out some very interesting colors or from spray tan booths that give a very fake all-over coat of heavy spray tan solution. The good news is that there are now spray tan solution manufacturers who actually know how to properly formulate DHA, and there are HVLP machines used by spray tan professionals to give spray tans that are so natural-looking you wouldn’t be able to tell it apart from a sun tan. At The Sorority our attention to detail is what sets us apart and our aim is to give you a spray tan no on knows you've had.
Do guys get spray tans?
Men do spray tan, often for the same reasons that women do: to feel more confident, look younger and healthier. While men may be more hesitant to try spray tanning, once they do they are just as hooked as everyone else! Here at The Sorority we believe that everyBODY deserves to glow.
I have a skin condition, can I still get a tan?
You should always speak with a doctor or a dermatologist before being tanned. If given approval, we’ll test a small area of your skin first, to make sure there aren’t any adverse reactions. As our solution is all-natural, it doesn’t normally irritate the skin. Our combination of rich natural fruits, plants, oils and extracts, soothe, strengthen and promote healthy skin.
Common skin conditions are – Eczema, Rosacea, Vitiligo, Psoriasis.
Will medications affect my spray tan?
Most acne medications, including face washes containing salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide, will dry out the skin, which can affect the results of the tan. Birth control pills, hormone replacement medications, or antibiotics may alter your tan. Please let your spray tan artist know if you are taking of these prior to your appointment.
The areas where my skin is really dry have grabbed the tan, so they look a bit darker. What can I do?
Don’t stress, if you had dry skin when you got your tan the solution tends to grab more to those areas, sometimes leading to a darker result. Lightly exfoliate the affected area under the shower and then moisturise this should help to even out the tan.
Sometimes the tan tends to grab more in areas if you haven't rinsed properly so make sure when you rinse you aren't too quick. If your shower pressure isn't firm we recommend staying in that shower a little longer making sure to lift your arms and do a little dance to make sure anywhere we have sprayed the solution it is rinsed off. We also recommend for the initial rinse to get a wash cloth soaked with water and gently rub the areas that may tend to grab or are drier on your skin.
